TRAUMA-INFORMED HORSEMANSHIP

What is Trauma-Informed Horsemanship?

Trauma-informed horsemanship can sound confusing, heavy, complex, or even just like an unnecessary buzzword. In my practice, it's so much more than that.

Trauma-informed horsemanship is a gentle, holistic approach that integrates a deep understanding and awareness of not only trauma, but equine nervous systems and equine neurobiology.

Usually, when we come up against challenging behaviours in our horses, our first thought is just - "how do I stop this?". Trauma-Informed Horsemanship offers us a different approach.

In my work, we interrogate and get deeply curious around how your horse is acting.

We are not trying to rid the horse of their behavioural issues or trauma responses - we are creating worlds where they no longer need them.

Working in this way allows you to transform your relationship to your horse's trauma, and horse's relationship with you and the world around them.

The way I practice trauma-informed horsemanship puts the responsibility to change on the human, not the horse. When we can change the horses environment, social life and even our own behaviour, we are creating opportunities for the horse to feel safe again.

If you are interested in how this work could help your horse, you can read about my horse Willow's story to get an insight into my process with her.

FAQ

1 / I don't think my horse is traumatised - why would I want trauma-informed horsemanship?

Despite the name, this way of working can be incredibly supportive to all horses, regardless of their history. You can learn more here.

2 / I'm sceptical about online coaching - without being in person, how can you help my horse?

Through online coaching, we have the space, time, and comfort to understand your horse and their behaviour from a simultaneously broad and detailed perspective. We can analyse videos of you working together, think through your horses history, and build practical training plans for you to take into your day-to-day life.

3 / Is it really science-y and intellectual?

No, we do not spend our sessions just talking about theory (unless you want to!). Although this way of working is founded on lots of scientific study, my job is to condense that into what is genuinely practical and useful for you and your horse. In short, I read the papers, so you don't have to.

4 / This is all a bit new and I'm still unsure...

No worries! You can book a free 30-minute discovery call where you can ask me absolutely anything, with no pressure to book anything afterwards if it doesn't align.

Remy Burley

Poppy is an incredibly kind, intuitive, and supportive horsewoman, who is skilled in supporting traumatised and troubled horses. Her support has changed my equine relationships by helping me to develop a greater sense of presence and mutual care. She has helped me learn that being with our horses in their struggle is what creates transformation, not just trying to change them. Poppy's impact on my life goes further than just in my relationships with horses. I take the lessons Poppy has taught me everywhere, from the barn to my local trail.  I would recommend poppy's services to anyone that wants to have a balanced and magical relationship with their horse, based on mutual communication, autonomy, and care.
